Reflections (AHHH)

So...it has been a full year of NKOTB madness. I for one have had a blast and I’ll tell you why...besides meeting the greatest friends ever, all over the U.S., I have gotten to go back in time a little and feel free again, like we did when we were kids, in the NKOTB era. Now a little bit of background about me...I’m not one to walk up to anyone I don’t know and tell them how much I love them, I don’t throw that word around lightly, so I can’t say that I absolutely love each guy personally, because well, I don’t know them. I also am not big on being dramatic when I meet them or interact with this whole funfest reunion. Their presence and the phenomenon did help me get away from some things in my life back in the day, but I’m not about to make anyone feel sorry for me or attempt to by pouring that all out there. I’m sarcastic, a smart ass, and well, I just don’t really care what anyone thinks of me, as long as I am the one having the last laugh. But at the same time, I’m a really good, strong, loyal trustworthy person, who’s always going to be there when someone needs me and who tries not to judge or act like I have any right to and who is going to live life to the fullest, I’ve been through some things, as I am sure most of us have, that have taught me. Life is definitely too short.
I LOVE what these guys represent in my life and what they represented when I was growing up. Before COMPLICATED took up residence. I love that they try to connect with their fans as much as possible, I LOVE how they show their friendship and the fun they have together; I love their music and awesome shows. This whole reunion has brought some freedom to a lot of our lives and it’s not about fantasizing over 5 guys we can’t have (hell I fantasize over at least 10 different celebrities a day). A dirty mind is a terrible thing to waste ya know! Anyhow, it’s about reconnecting with that youth, that energy, that freedom we used to have with friends, and with life. As we had bedroom wall paper of NKOTB posters and memorabilia, we threw slumber parties in those bedrooms and talked about the current boy we were crushing on (besides, Donnie, Joey, Jordan, Danny, Jon). We had our own phone lines, and talked on it all night long to girlfriends or boyfriends whispering the whole time so our parents couldn’t hear. We headed to a friends house to listen to music (NKOTB of course, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Cyndi Lauper, CMB, Michael Jackson, when he was a man) and tried on each other’s clothes and raided each other’s refrigerators. In the summers we hung out all day long with friends, riding our bikes, at the mall, or watching MTV (Mini Vanilli anyone?). Whatever was going on in our lives, with our parents, or families, or a boy that broke our hearts didn’t matter. We had that freedom, that spirited life that took us away from it all, and it was easy to forget and move on. As adults we hold on to so much that we can’t control and it takes a toll on us, but when we were young... NEVER! We’d hop on our bike, go to our friend’s house, be sad for maybe a split second and vent and then we’d turn on THE RIGHT STUFF or GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN and all would be right with the world. Remember pop rocks, or the fake candy cigarettes (yeah this dork, thought she was real cool). Remember spending your weekends with your girlfriends at the skating rink moonlighting with the cutest boy in school to I’ll Be Loving You Forever? What about falling down on purpose so your boy could fall on top of you? LMAO, okay so that was only me probably. What about garbage pail kids, and Mad Max on the Coca Cola commercials, or the TV show Alf or Pee Wee Herman, and actually HAND writing notes to each other, and folding them in these super artistic designs? And the fashion? Let’s not even go there, I made my son’s football pads our of the shoulder pads I kept from my wardrobe (KIDDING). All in all my point is, I love this group, and what they represent, what we all know we got away from as we grew up. There is nothing and I mean absolutely NOTHING wrong with taking a little of that back and applying it to your life in the present. Kids or no kids, marriages or no marriages, I don’t call it living in a fantasy world, or unrealistically, I call it free spirit and wrinkle reducer. FUN! LAUGHTER! SILLINESS! Just like DDub keeps tweeting "live life to the fullest" and he actually does what he says even though it drives us crazy. I love the people I’ve met, it’s all one big family really, it started with 5 bad boys from the beantown land and a new kid’s dance, and ended with life long memories, laughter, friendships, inside jokes that no one gets but you and your girlfriends. THIS? IS the reality that you’ve been avoiding all these years with drama, complicated, negative people in your life. We’ve all been guilty of letting all of that in, and taking up permanent residence. For those of us who were fans and have always been fans, in a way this reunion was a sign for us in our lives, so that we could bring back a little bit of what we had been missing all these years. Don’t think this got thrown our way by mistake! After all, if you want to count your blessings, in my opinion Humor/Laughter/Free Spirit IS mankind’s greatest blessing. There is a time to be serious, a time to be responsible, and considerate of your personal life, but you do it with a smile, you do it with some humor, and you’ll WILL love and appreciate it even more. This reunion, even long after it’s over, hopefully is a new beginning for a lot of us and I’m blessed to have been a part of it. *Shout out to all of you who know me, and spend time with me in person, who know me and spend time with me on tweets, through blogs, message boards, texts, emails, you all know who you are, THANK YOU for helping me get out of a dark place I once was in, and moving on. And to the guys well, you are the whip cream and cherries on top! YUM
Put THAT in your TWEET and SMOKE it DEW! I can be just as deep. HOLLA!

  1. I, too, loved those candy cigarettes. However, I enjoyed watching Gerardo on MTV over Milli Vanilli. *Rico. Ah Ay Ah. Suave-ay.*

All joking aside, I feel the exact same way about this escape from the grown-up world that we all get to experience since these 5 guys came back into our lives. I've tried to explain it to other people and they just don't get it...but, I have discovered that many people I know are jealous of it. They don't know how to reconnect with their adolescent selves the way we have. While I've been busy working full-time, being a full-time grad student, and attempting to be a full-time wife (this one I should probably only get part-time status for), The Block, talking with you gals, and all of the scheming to meet the boys, have been such an amazing stress release for me. So thank you all from the bottom of my heart for letting me be a part of the crew.

  2. I freaking love it. Couldn't have said it better myself. AND I freaking love YOU!

You're right - we've been able to reclaim some fun in our lives and have shut the door on negativity. I needed it just as much as apparently the guys did as well as all of the wonderful people I've met. Word to that!

  3. You said it perfect Crystal! Others just don't get it. You even try to explain it to them in a way they could understand, and they STILL don't get it! I should print this out and post it at work and on my EFFIN front door *wink*
